Position Summary
The Special Assignment Operations Supervisor I is a frontline supervisory role responsible for managing day-to-day operations and staff in a package sortation facility. The incumbent champions safety initiatives, ensures high quality and efficiency of package handling, and drives key performance metrics. This role involves both hands-on operations and administrative oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a visible advocate for FedEx’s Safety Above All culture; support safety programs and initiatives
- Recruit, hire, coach, train, evaluate, and if needed, terminate staff (Package Handlers and potentially administrative personnel)
- Plan, organize, staff, direct, and control daily operations to ensure efficient and accurate package sortation
- Assign staffing to various work areas, monitor throughput, and ensure adherence to performance standards
- Monitor and manage trailer movement, tracking, and coordination with linehaul as needed
- Analyze operational data, interpret reports, and develop action plans to address performance gaps
- Lead daily briefings and meetings; communicate operational goals, updates, and expectations
- Administer employee relations strategies, maintaining confidentiality on sensitive matters
- Assist in formulating and enforcing safety strategies and policies at the facility
- Investigate and resolve customer service issues or escalate as needed
- Train new employees on job duties, requirements (e.g. quality, SWAK, hazardous materials, dock safety, etc.)
- Mentor and develop less experienced supervisors and team members
- Remain flexible and adapt to changing business conditions, shifting priorities, or operational needs
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Alternatively, 2+ years of college coursework or relevant certification may substitute for experience
Experience:
- At least 6 months of relevant experience (e.g. as a package handler, in a high-pace environment like retail, warehouse, dock, stockroom, or military experience with honorable discharge)
- Supervisory or leadership experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong leadership skills; ability to motivate, empower, and influence diverse teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication, suitable for conveying messages in small and large group settings
- Ability to read, analyze, and draw conclusions from numerical data and written reports
- Business judgment to set goals, prioritize tasks, and make decisions
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other web‐based/technology systems
- Capability to mentor, coach, and serve as a resource to staff
- Adaptability, sense of urgency, and positivity under pressure

Compensation & Benefits
- Starting pay: approximately USD $22.50/hr (subject to experience, location, and job level)
