Process Development Senior Scientist – Process Chemistry

Amgen is seeking a talented Process Development Senior Scientist to join our Drug Substance Technologies – Synthetics (DSTS) group. This group, part of Process Development (PD), is responsible for inventing, developing, and implementing drug substance manufacturing processes and technologies to advance Amgen’s portfolio of synthetic and hybrid assets.

As a Process Chemist within the team, you will apply your synthetic training to invent synthetic routes and develop chemical processes to support drug substance manufacturing from early to late-stage development. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, team-oriented, and possess a strong background in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry, with a proven track record of scientific innovation and achievement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Invent synthetic routes and develop safe, robust, and cost-effective processes to manufacture synthetic and hybrid drug substances.
  • Advance enabling technologies to accelerate pharmaceutical development and improve sustainability and process efficiency.
  • Support cGMP manufacturing and technology transfer to internal manufacturing facilities and external contract manufacturers.
  • Ensure process performance through process understanding, modeling, and characterization.
  • Contribute to drug substance development teams by providing experimental results, technical updates, documentation, data interpretation, and recommendations.
  • Work cross-functionally to deliver regulatory documents and support regulatory filings.
  • Serve as a technical expert and stay current in the field of organic and process chemistry.
  • Collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, and attribute scientists.
  • Work independently to advance projects and studies within required deadlines.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in Chemistry, to be completed by June 2025, OR
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry with 4 years of industry experience, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with 6 years of industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in organic chemistry with expertise in areas such as total synthesis, reaction methodology, mechanistic studies, biocatalysis, peptide chemistry, oligonucleotide chemistry, conjugation chemistry, and/or chemoinformatics/machine learning.
  • Post-doctoral experience in an academic laboratory or the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.
  • A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment to achieve results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to multitask, plan, and execute complex projects effectively.
  • A research summary included with your CV is strongly encouraged.

Salary Range:

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is $125,274 to $143,832. Actual salary will vary based on factors such as skills, experience, and qualifications.
