Associate Editor or Senior Editor

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, is seeking a talented individual to join our team as an Associate Editor to champion research in global and public health. In this position, you will be soliciting primary research content in areas of strategic priority, handling the editorial assessment and peer-review of these manuscripts in collaboration with your team manager, organizing events and engaging with the scientific community in conferences and site visits, and spearheading growth in health-related content.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (starting July 2024), and will preferably be located in either our New York or Shanghai office, although requests for possible placement in one of the other Nature editorial offices will also be considered and internal candidates – should they be successful – could stay in their current location.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of research in global and public health and will play a key role in expanding our content in these areas.  They should be keen to interact extensively with the health research and policy communities to champion our mission to elevate research with the goal of protecting and promoting health for all.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant research discipline, and ideally with some post-doctoral research or policy experience.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty.
  • A vision of the way in which Nature can strategically expand into global and public health and become known for publishing societally-relevant work that can potentially impact policy.
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
  • A collaborative spirit: you will be working in a team setting, striving to support and mentor others, and to maximize our collective success.
  • Flexibility: be comfortable with working in a fast-paced environment and understanding that our priorities may change with the evolution of medical research and what’s happening in the world.
  • Outstanding organization and time management skills; being able to set priorities for yourself and for others, and to adapt quickly to change.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

The successful candidate will report to the relevant team manager but as this is an interdisciplinary role, they will also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the editorial team. They will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community.

Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.
